Social anxiety

Social anxiety is a particular kind of fear or unease caused by social situations.

More than feeling shy, social anxiety is when these anxious feelings start to interfere with how you live your life.

The good news is that there are strategies to help you feel more confident and more in control of your thoughts and feelings.

Symptoms of anxiety

People with social anxiety often feel very worried or stressed by everyday interactions with other people. It can be experienced before, during or even after the social situation.

The symptoms vary from person to person. Most of the time, the signs of social anxiety include:

  • feeling worried about social interactions to the point that it affects your daily life
  • avoiding other people out of worry or fear
  • feeling embarrassed and judged
  • physical reactions of stress in social situations such as sweating, trembling, feeling sick or a raised heart rate

How online therapy helps

Online therapy can be an effective way to treat social anxiety. It's recommended by the NHS for mild and moderate cases.

At Livi Mental Health, our therapists specialise in a form of online therapy called Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

CBT teaches you practical ways to improve your state of mind and help control your feelings. Our therapists use evidence-based techniques to reframe negative thoughts and break patterns of behaviour.

The treatment we offer depends on what you need – and what you want, of course. After discussing how you feel, your therapist will design a treatment plan to suit you.
